Freedom and Spirit

Rescued from a truck chase in 90 degree heat----------Spirit found refuge on a
farm in Cleveland County. On a dreadfully hot day in 2010 Freedom in search of
water had broken her tether. When her irresponsible owner noticed her loose he
attempted Freedom’s round up with his own pick up truck. Unaccustomed to
kindness and love Freedom ran.....she continued to run until a compassionate
passerby noticed and stopped to offer assistance. Little did Freedom know
that assistance was offered to her and not her owner. Threatened with a call to
police the man stopped the chase. By that time an AWA representative was on the
scene and was trying to negotiate a rescue. During that process she conferred with
a knowledgeable equestrian. Their combined efforts yielded the following
information:

Freedom had foaled within the month; the baby had died at 3 days of age due to malnutrition ( Freedom was unable to produce milk for her baby due to her own malnutrition); scarring was found on her pasterns; her life experience up to this point had left her an emotional wreck.

Once Freedom was caught real negotiation for both her and Spirit (palomino stallion) were initiated. During the process it was determined the owner was out of state and that Freedom and Spirit were merely being kept at that residence which was a city lot------with no barn, stable, fencing-----------------------Spirit and Freedom’s home was no more than a stake in the ground during the day and the confines of a utility building on some nights. When asked if the pair could be bought a price was quoted. Our representative dickered. A price was finalized and we awaited word from the owner for a sale. Within 48 hours their new home was found, they were loaded and transported to it, and their new lives begun. Once at their new home they had a health check and necessary treatments administered. Freedom was found to be pregnant with a due date of May 2011. So care was taken to ensure that she would deliver a healthy foal. Spirit was gelded. The two enjoyed the simple life for awhile------eating and resting.
